An off-grid cortijo with 4.5 acres of land situated in the Parque Natural in the Eastern Alpujarras. South facing, the property has the most incredible views out to the distant Mediterranean, and across to the mountains of Morocco on clear days. Perfect for living a low impact, self-sustainable lifestyle, there is a productive veg garden with raised beds, compost bins, chicken house and run, and dozens of trees, providing fruit, nuts and firewood.
The cortijo is a large building comprising a three double bedroom house and a separate self contained studio with shower room and kitchenette for guest accommodation. There is a large walk-in pantry in the kitchen of the main house and also a large workshop/store where the solar batteries are housed.
We have a bed and breakfast tourist licence and are Airbnb superhosts with an established five star rated letting history, generating income.
The cortijo has water rights from the acequia (ancient irrigation channels built by the Moors to bring water from Sierra Nevada mountains and this plentiful source supplies the household water and the pool. For drinking water, we take advantage of the many local Fuentes (Yegen alone has five) and collect it in containers. Close by there is also a fuente with delicious naturally carbonated water.
There are a great many trees on the land including 8 enormous sweet chestnuts, over 60 almonds, Quince, cherry, pear, apple, young peach, persimmon, Mulberry, fig, and plum.
Perennials which have recently been planted include Asparagus, comfrey, Young rhubarb
The Alpujarras are a wonderfully verdant part of Spain with distinct and beautiful seasons – riot of colour in Spring when wildflower meadow blooms, spectacular autumn colours, crisp but sunny winter days when the surrounding mountains are breathtaking with snow on top
Sierra Nevada ski resort is just over 2 hours drive and the Med is under an hour. Historic city of Granada
There is a large swimming pool plus additional round plunge pool, terraces for sunloungers and hammocks, and shady swing seats.
Electricity is supplied from 6 solar panels. These are adequate to run all the house’s needs including a large fridge freezer, washing machine and big TV. New batteries were installed in this year plus there is a petrol generator and battery charger.
A new hot water system was installed in 2018 comprising a 300 litre solar thermal tank and a backup gas boiler. There is a large open fireplace plus woodburner in guest room.
We have an excellent internet connection and good mobile phone coverage.
Outside, there is a wonderful outdoor kitchen/dining area featuring a large table under a shady pergola, barbecue and clay oven. There is a fully stocked log store and a shaded potting area.
On a secluded lower terrace, (a wildflower meadow in Spring) there is a small stone circle next to the babbling brook which is a perfect, tranquil space for yoga, meditation or simply relaxing.
All the windows have shutters and mosquito screens and there are additional screen doors on all external doorways.
The cortijo is accessed from the main road via a 1.5 km long track, which is part concreted and part dirt. A 4×4 is not necessary.
The village of Yegen, made famous by Gerald Brennan in his book ‘South From Grananda’, is 10 minutes drive away (or 20 minutes on foot via a very pleasant walk down an old mule track directly accessed from our land) The village has a post office, a small supermarket, a bakery, ham shop and a twice monthly market, as well as a almost daily fish van. There is a school, doctor’s surgery and pharmacy, plus a number of bars and restaurants. There are also free weekly Spanish lessons for foreigners. Larger supermarkets can be found in the neighbouring towns of Cadiár and Ugijar. The GR 7 long distance walking route passes by Yegen.
The cortijo has full vivienda status (very important as not all cortijos do!) and the boundaries are clearly defined.
